Halloween Safety
Soon the ghost, goblins, witches, and monsters will be filling our streets in search of some tasty treats. Below are some tips to help make Halloween a safe and fun time.
Keeping everyone safe will make for an enjoyable day and the children will be encouraged to keep the tradition for years to come.
For Children
- Walk only on the sidewalk, not in the street.
- Cross the street only at a corner and look both ways before crossing.
- Never get into a car with a stranger
- Do not go into the home of a stranger.
- Never eat any treats until they have been examined by an adult.
- Carry a flashlight and place reflective tape on your costume and bag so that you can be seen easily.
For Adults
- Review all basic safety information with children before going Trick-or-Treating.
- Discuss appropriate and inappropriate behavior with your children.
- Teach children the difference between tricks and vandalism.
- Make sure children eat a meal before going out so that they will be less tempted to eat treats along the way.
- Always have a parent or responsible adult accompany small children when they are Trick-or-Treating.
- When children are old enough to go out by themselves, plan a safe route and set a time for their return home.
- Place a note with your child's name, address, and phone number in their pocket in case they get separated from the group.
- Examine all treats before letting children eat them - When in doubt, throw it out.
For Homeowners
- Remove obstructions from your stairs and walkways.
- Turn on your exterior lights when you are expecting trick-or-treaters.
- Keep candlelit Jack-O-Lanterns and decorations a safe distance away from your doors and walkways.
- Do not overload electrical outlets with decorations.
For Motorists
- Drive slowly since children may be wearing dark-colored costumes.
- Be watchful for children running out from between parked cars.
- Enter and exit driveways cautiously.
- Be aware for children walking in roadways.
